The End of David Adaire

2009
06.18

After four years, I have decided to close down my site davidadaire.com.  The renewal notice came in the mail recently and I couldn’t think of a good reason to keep it open any longer. Since last year, I’ve been blogging here and have transferred all of the davidadaire.com archives over here.

Initially, David Adaire seemed to me to be a cool-sounding pen name to have. It still has a certain ring to it. But I suppose more than anything I have grown tired of its ambiguity. No that’s not it.

Dave in the News

So why am I closing it down? Ah yes, I don’t want to pay the renewal fee. Not a satisfying reason? Well then, I don’t want to pay, plus all that other stuff about names and duplication.

Plus, I’ll rest more soundly at night now knowing that the real David Adaires of the world need no longer suffer the intolerable shame of being davidadaire1.com or even therealdavidadaire.com. Poor guys have had it hard the past few years.

This will not be the last domain name I shut down in my life, but it was my first ever domain. It saw me starting out as a naive English teacher in Korea and saw me blossom into the delicate flower that I am today.

Goodbye David Adaire dot com. May you find your one true nameserver somewhere, someday out there in cyberspace.

Goodbye too David Adaire.  Your name was okay, but you just didn’t write anything dude.

Low-Maintenance Life

2006
12.04

I like my low-maintenance motorbike. I like my low-maintenance body. I especially like my low-maintenance girlfriend. Maybe you see a pattern here. I did, and that’s why I changed my website to one I can more easily manage. I was growing jealous with all the blogs that could easily insert photos into their posts. It was after reading such a blog that I decided I needed to do something about it.

There are two changes to my site. First, I now use WordPress to blog. Second, I installed Gallery for my photos. Both systems are nowhere near ready to run, but it’s going to save me time and improve the visuals once I’ve tweaked them a bit.

Sorry if you were a little disoriented by the whole new look.. but really, it’s only to bring it into line with the rest of the things I love.

Settle Down

2006
04.17

It’s been a while since the last post because I have had pressing matters at hand. I had to find a job. I had to find an apartment. Two weeks later, both of these matters have been taken care of and I have time for these trivial posts. Only not now. Just thought I’d comment for comments sake.

I just found out that all emails sent to my david@davidadaire.com email address haven’t been getting through. If you tried to send an email at all during the past few months, I’m sorry I didn’t get it, that’s why there was no response.

I have resolved the problem and it should be ok. If not, you can always drop me a line at my adaire(at)gmail.com address.

RSS

2006
02.22

I have been called a techno-junkie, yes and I guess it’s true. So let me educate on a new feature of this site. It’s RSS. Now, until a few weeks ago I didn’t know what RSS was either and I didn’t really care. Then I thought I’d find out a little more.

RSS stands for “Real Simple Syndication”. It is basically a small piece of text which carries news. It lets you know when a page has been updated without needing to visit that page. It is becoming more and more popular and now the main blogging sites offer RSS feeds of the latest posts. Not liking to be behind, I decided that my site needed this feature too.

Still confused? I don’t blame you.

Normally, if you like a site, you might save it as a bookmark in your Favorites menu. But then, if you want to check out all the sites you like, you click on them all and review them. Pah! Too slow. If you just had a little piece of text like the date it was updated and the latest headline, you could check everything with a glance. That is RSS. It’s like Google News, where many sources come together and give you the headline.

The new Internet Explorer will have an option for subscribing to these feeds, just like Firefox which has offered RSS for a long time. Also, if you have Google Desktop with the sidebar, you can subscribe using the Web Clips section. Have a look at today’s photo to see a screenshot of this wonderful wonderful feature. If you want to try it out, copy the following into your RSS reader or into the Google Webclips options section:

Oh don’t I sound like the world’s biggest nerd? Ok I’ll cut it out now. Next blog will be about something cool, I promise.
