Shanghai A Week Later

Some time since the last post, so I thought I might briefly catch up. After Korea, went back home for a couple of weeks, seeing family, catching up with old friends and eating all my favorite foods. Then, it was off to Shanghai for my new job. I’m working now at a Korean school, teaching pretty much the same kids as I did in Seoul, only that their conversation is a little better due to them attending international schools here.

China is nice. The smell of the place is different to Korea. Everywhere I go I can smell food and so far I’ve never had to breathe the foul sewer smell that Seoullites live with. It’s a huge city, honestly, with all but a few signs written in Chinese. It’s hard to get an immediate grasp of the pronunciation so talking with taxi drivers and waiters is always a challenge. Transportation ain’t the best, there are only 4 subway lines and I’m not living that close to one. Taxis, while cheap, are terrifying modes of transport, due to their swerving, dodging, honking and generally reckless behavior. But it’s fun.

I can get a lot of different types of food, which is great. Chinese food can be oily, but when you consider that I got a massive plate of fried beef noodles for 1.50, well what isn’t there to like. And that was an upscale restaurant!

I have also made contact with my gym, but the 40 minute travel time to get there is going to wear me down. I’m planning to find my own apartment soon, so I’ll try to locate one close to the station.

As far as bars and the expat scene goes, Shanghai definitely has more in the way of international patronage than Seoul, though I never thought this would be otherwise. However whereas in Korea you have a “we’re all in this together” kind of attitude, the vast cosmopolitan nature of Shanghai makes it seem more “we’re all here tonight” kind of vibe.

But I’ve only been here a week and a half, so I do have so so much to learn, and so many signs to photograph:
